What is Muck?
Muck is the dead organic debris accumulating on your pond’s bottom that you often feel between your toes when you step in. If left untreated, a typical pond or lake will receive approximately 1/2″ of muck buildup every year. Muck is not just a problem for your toes; muck is a fertilizer for aquatic weeds and algae. Over time, ponds and lakes, in the Effingham, Breese, Carlyle, Marion County -IL area, with heavy muck will require more frequent treatments to keep aquatic vegetation under control. While we do not dredge ponds or lakes, we offer specialized natural bacteria treatments at a fraction of the cost of dredging and are much less invasive to the surrounding lawn and landscape. Natural Muck Reduction Program
Biological Control: With the use of Airmax MuckAway, we can regularly remove up to 8-12″ of muck per season. This all-natural process converts muck into a harmless gas that will dissipate unnoticed out of the water column.
Aeration: Installing bottom-diffused aeration provides circulation while increasing dissolved oxygen. This process reduces nuisance weeds and algae, improves water quality, and dramatically increases the performance of MuckAway.
Manual Raking of Debris: While raking a pond will not do much to remove current pond muck, removing debris such as leaves, twigs, and other organics will reduce future muck problems and quickly improve overall aesthetics.

How long will it take to remove the muck from my pond?
Every pond is different and the time needed to reduce muck accumulation will depend on the amount of muck present, and the amount of circulation in the pond. Stagnant ponds with little or no circulation may see more isolated results, than ponds that utilize natural bacteria and aeration. With the use of natural bacteria and aeration, you can successfully remove several inches of muck per season.
Occasionally we do provide dredging services for clients in our area. Pond dredging may offer an instant fix to muck accumulation, but it is not a long-term solution to muck problems.
